Wednesday Officially Renewed at Netflix

It’s official: Wednesday will return.

Netflix just announced that the hit series, Tim Burton’s spin-off of the classic Addams Family franchise, has been renewed for a second season. The eight-episode first season hit the streamer on November 23 and has since become one of Netflix’s most popular shows.

The show beat out Dahmer to become the streamer’s second-most streamed series of all time, sitting only behind Stranger Things Season 4.

Wednesday sees budding star Jenna Ortega playing Wednesday Addams, the iconic daughter of Morticia and Gomez Addams who was previously played by Christina Ricci. The horror comedy series showcases Wednesday’s first years as a student at Nevermore Academy, where she attempts to master her emerging psychic ability while trying to solve a supernatural mystery that has haunted the Addams family for decades.

The series drew a massive audience as well as solid reviews, with IGN giving it a 7/10. Amelia Emberwing’s review reads: “Wednesday introduces a whole new generation to the Addams family with creepy and kooky hijinks and an incredible performance from Jenna Ortega. Some tertiary characters struggle from weak writing while more interesting players are kept on the sidelines, but it’s not enough to bog down the series too much.”

It was previously rumored that the hit series would be making the move to Amazon Prime, but various reports emphasized that the move would not happen. Now, it’s obvious that Netflix sees Wednesday as a tentpole series — so get ready for some more miserable hijinks.

Season 1 of Wednesday is currently available for streaming on Netflix. Alongside Ortega, the cast includes Gwendoline Christie, Jamie McShane, Percy Hynes White, Hunter Doohan, Emma Myers, Joy Sunday, Naomi J. Ogawa, Moosa Mostafa, Georgie Farmer, Riki Lindhome and Christina Ricci. Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán and Isaac Ordonez also make appearances.
