WhatsApp responds to IT minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar’s tweet on wrong map of India

WhatsApp promptly responded to union minister of state for electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar‘s tweet regarding the incorrect map tweeted by the company. The Meta-owned instant messaging platform WhatsApp had tweeted the wrong map of India in its New Year celebration live-streaming link. The IT minister, tagging WhatsApp, asked the company to immediately fix the error. In the tweet, the minister also reiterated that all social media platforms that do business in India must use the correct map of the country.
“Dear @WhatsApp Rqst that u pls fix the India map error asap. All platforms that do business in India and/or want to continue to do business in India, must use correct maps,” tweeted Chandrasekhar.

WhtasApp immediately deleted the tweet and apologised for the inadvertent error. “Thank you Minister for pointing out the unintended error; we have promptly removed the stream, apologies. We will be mindful in the future,” said WhatsApp responding to the minister’s tweet.
Second ‘warning’
Incidentally, this is the second ‘warning’ issued by the minister in the last few days. Recently, Chandrasekhar issued a similar ‘warning’ to Zoom CEO and founder Eric Yuan after he tweeted a video that showed a distorted map of India.
“You may want to make sure u use correct maps of the countries u do/want to do business in,” Chandrasekhar told Yuan.

Yuan had tweeted a video that highlighted the top video calling platforms across the globe. The video in the tweet had the wrong map of India. The map did not have the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
Zoom CEO deleted the tweet after Chandrasekhar’s tweet. He also thanked the minister and others who pointed out the error. “I recently took down a tweet that many of you had pointed out had issues with the map. Thank you for the feedback!!” he tweeted.
