A huge 60 percent of British women say they’re too busy to wash their hair and a quarter of us employ dry shampoo to allow us to leave our hair for four days before washing it again. Don’t worry, Express.co.uk consulted the experts and chatted to the founders of Fable and Mane, Akash and Nikita Mehta, to find out why your hair might be so greasy.
Greasy hair is caused by an excess or build-up of sebum, which is the natural oil produced by our scalp.
These oils are there for a reason – to nourish the scalp, support your strands and protect their proteins.
However, when these oils build up over a few days they leave your hair looking oilier, darker, and flat to your head.
This is more likely to happen with finer hair because it’s more absorbent.

Should I avoid putting oil on my scalp?
Sometimes experts say to avoid putting any oil or product on the scalp, but the team at Fable and Mane reckon hair oiling can benefit greasy hair.
They said: “There are some common misconceptions when it comes to hair oiling, making your hair greasy being one of them.
“It’s very important to remember not to apply too much oil as a little goes a long way.
“The amount to use will depend on your hair type and whether you’re using the oil to massage your scalp, seal the strand, or lubricate the ends.
“For instance, if you have a naturally oily scalp, you may want to avoid using oils on your scalp and roots and focus on your strands instead to give your hair a natural shine.
“However, if you have naturally very fine and straight hair, you may want to avoid using oils on your strands, so they don’t weigh the hair down or make it look greasy.
“You can still apply it to your roots before washing your hair, however, to reap other benefits such as stimulating blood flow in the scalp and massaging hair follicles to encourage hair growth. Ensure you rinse out your hair thoroughly afterwards.”
