5G on Apple, Samsung phones: Government to ‘intervene’

5G rollout has started in the country. Days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched 5G services on October 1, both Airtel and Reliance Jio have announced plans for rollout. Airtel has launched 5G services in 8 cities in the country, Reliance Jio has rolled beta trial of its 5G Plus services in key metropolises. While telecom companies seem to be taking baby steps to launch 5G services, Apple and Samsung still need to roll out software upgrades to support 5G in the country. As of now, none of the 5G iPhones in the country are 5G-ready, some models from Samsung too need software update to run 5G.
To push the same, the government is reportedly holding a meeting with the executives of top telcos and smartphone brands. Top bureaucrats from India’s telecoms and IT departments will chair a meeting on October 11 for early 5G adoption.
According to a report in news agency Reuters, the government will push Apple, Samsung and other mobile phone manufacturers to prioritise rolling out software upgrades to support 5G in the country. The agenda includes holding talks “to prioritise” and release software upgrades for supporting the high-speed network, the notice for the closed-door meeting stated.
While telecom players and smartphone companies have been holding discussions with each other, ironing out compatibility issues between the specific 5G technology of telecom companies in India and phone software is taking time, one of the industry sources told the agency.
Airtel’s website shows that “Apple yet to update software” for all of the iPhones that are 5G compatible. Sources claim that Apple is in the process of testing and validating different 5G offerings from network providers in India. For Samsung too, many models were not ready, Airtel stated.
Interestingly, quite a few models of Chinese smartphone brands, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo are shown as ready for use with its 5G service.
