Spain Tourist Board tries to calm fears as UK holidaymakers face new £85 a day checks | Travel News | Travel
Some Britons with the hopes of travelling to Spain this summer were confused and alarmed that they would have to have to spend a minimum of £750 on their trips. They were also worried they would have to prove they had £85 per day to spend.
The Spanish Tourist Office has made a statement to settle these worries.
However, it has not denied the claims.
The office said: “The requirement for UK travellers to be able to illustrate sufficient means for the duration of their stay and the return is established in the Schengen Borders Code and is not a Spain-specific requirement.”
But the rules are not new in the Schengen Borders Code, and should not come as a surprise to holidaymakers.
Manuel Butler, the Spanish Tourist Office director, added: ‘’This is not a new requirement and has been in place for some time for visitors from outside of the European Union or Schengen area.’’
However, Britons may not have realised this was in place.
So what does this mean for British tourists going on their holidays this summer?
They would need to be able to prove that they could support themselves and any dependants.
Manuel explained that there are similar rules for travellers entering the UK.
Visitors would need to show they had sufficient means for their visit.
According to Spain’s Ministry of Interior, the amount of money tourists have should depend on the length of their stay.
However, the minimum amount is $900 (equivalent to £750).
This is $100 (£85) per person per day.
For those not travelling solo, this needs to be taken into account.
This was effective on January 1, 2022.
So, travellers to the sunny destination needn’t be surprised or alarmed.

It states that travellers may be required to do the following: “Show you have enough money for your stay. More information is available from the Spanish Ministry of Interior (in Spanish).
“Show proof of accommodation for your stay, for example, a hotel booking confirmation, proof of address if visiting your own property (e.g. second home), or an invitation from your host or proof of their address if staying with a third party, friends or family.”
