AFL, Jordan De Goey, Collingwood Magpies, New York assault charge, outcome, alcohol

Jordan De Goey’s manager insists the Collingwood star doesn’t have an alcohol problem, despite being ordered to undergo therapy.

The 25-year-old was arrested in October following an altercation at a bar in New York. He and a friend got into a physical confrontation with another group of people.

De Goey on Saturday plead guilty to one count of harrassment, after the charges were downgraded. He was ordered to undergo anger management and alcohol therapy, while the Magpies have insisted he do work with the Salvation Army.

His agent, Ryan Vague, doesn’t expect any further punishment for the incident.

“We are not facing any (further) sanctions or any more from the footy club apart from the program put around him, the Salvos and a few other things we will work on,” Vague said on SEN.

“He will comply and meet with the AFL, but at this stage everyone is comfortable with, in some ways, his penance of a stand down and time away from the footy club is enough.

“I don’t see any extra sanctions will come and we have all got to that point (in) agreeance.”

Vague confirmed De Goey has not been placed on an alcohol ban, and had no plans to do it himself.

That’s despite the fact a judge told him to seek therapy for alcohol issues.

“That hasn’t been something that at the moment we have been looking at,” Vague said.

“I know with the charges there was a bit of alcohol (involved) and the anger stuff that comes from the sessions that he has to do. He will undergo that education and will be very compliant, and will be willing to do so.

“He doesn’t have an alcohol problem or an anger management problem, but he is willing to do that education.

“At this stage we don’t see Jordan doing a self-imposed alcohol ban, but if the time comes and he believes it would be better for him, he would consider it.

“But at this stage, from all the parties, we don’t see that being an issue.”

De Goey is one of Collingwood’s highest paid players and is widely considered one of the best in the AFL, certainly with potential to be the sole best.

The Magpies endured a horror 2021 season, finishing 17th on the ladder, during which coach Nathan Buckley was sacked mid-campaign.

De Goey is a key piece of the puzzle to improving in 2022.
