There wasn’t much that could keep Brent Harvey away from the game during his 432-game record AFL career, but a broken leg in suburb football might keep him out for a long time.

Playing for North Heidelberg in the Northern Football League on Saturday, the North Melbourne legend appeared to suffer a gruesome broken leg during the first quarter of the match.

On Saturday night, Harvey posted an update on his Instagram page, assuring his followers with positive news.

“Thanks for all the messages guys,” he said.

“Will be getting surgery tomorrow and all will be fine.

“The positive about breaking a leg is that I have another one. Thanks again for the love.”

Pictures from the match showed Harvey holding his leg with an obvious grimace on his face and his right leg appearing to bend the wrong way.

Reports in the Herald Sun revealed Harvey had to wait until half-time for an ambulance to arrive and take him to Epworth Hospital.

Ambulance Victoria Union general secretary Danny Hill told the masthead that the 50-minute wait was “too long”.

“Of course it’s always a concern to hear situations like this, that is way too long to wait for an ambulance,” Hill said.

“Nationwide we are seeing paramedics dealing with cases that should be dealt with by a general practitioner.

“That’s what is really overwhelming the system at the moment is that sort of work.

“When that happens, the crews are unavailable to respond to the real emergencies and sadly, probably, that’s what has happened to this footballer today.”

Harvey holds the record for most games played at VFL/AFL level.
