Amazon is reportedly working on creating a standalone app for sports content in an effort to add a new revenue stream. The news comes soon after Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced that the company will continue to invest in live sports.
Citing a source with direct knowledge of the plan, a report by The Information says that a standalone app will likely complement Amazon’s effort to double down on sports programming through its Prime Video service. The streaming Prime Video already has multiple sports-related shows and series.
The report, however, says that there is no clarity on the roll out plan of the app. Moreover, Amazon already owns the rights to stream games from events such as the National Football League‘s Thursday Night Football franchise and Premier League soccer matches in the UK.

Recently, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy called live sports “a unique asset” and said that the company will continue to invest in that space. Amazon has also invested in other sports content such as original sports talk shows.
The company essentially wants to ride the popularity of one of the biggest attractions in the streaming space. A report by news agency Reuters says that the US audience is increasingly switching from pay TV subscriptions to streaming apps.
Google’s YouTube recently secured the rights to stream the NFL Sunday Ticket and Apple struck a deal to live stream Major League Baseball and Major League Soccer games.

India also sets a viewership record
In fact, India recently set a viewership record by live streaming the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 on JioCinema apps. The platform announced that 32 million viewers tuned in to the app to watch the match on the final day of the tournament. It also said that over 110 million viewers consumed the content on digital, making India one of the highest digital viewership markets for the FIFA World Cup.
