Andy Murray has now reacted to the sad news that has rocked the tennis world, having contested some epic matches with the Argentine including a four-set marathon in the Rio 2019 Olympic gold medal match.

“I haven’t seen it. I heard about it. And it’s obviously very sad because he’s had many issues, throughout his career, physical problems,” the current world No 95 said, speaking in Rotterdam ahead of the ATP 500 event this week. “I don’t know, you hope that things are gonna get better”

The three-time Major champion has had his own injury woes, admitting at the 2019 Australian Open that it could be his final tournament after struggling with a hip injury for several years, though he later underwent a hip resurfacing surgery and was able to mount a successful comeback.

He continued: “A lot of tough times and everything that you go through and it’s not on camera. I haven’t sort of heard too much from from him in the last, I don’t know, six months or a year, had seen a few videos of him practicing and trying to get back to playing.

“It must have been unbelievably difficult for him. I don’t really know what to say. I know having been in that position myself. You feel like you’re sort of suffering a lot of the time alone or maybe the people around you know exactly what’s going on.”
