The US lawmakers are taking a trip to Hollywood and Silicon Valley to meet with CEOs and other top-level executives, including Apple CEO Tim Cook, among others at Disney, Alphabet, Microsoft, and more this week. According to reports, the topic of discussion is likely to be related to China.
A bipartisan delegation, which includes representatives from both the Republican and Democratic parties, is being led by Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI), chairman of the new House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party. In this three-day trip to California, Gallagher will be joined by 10 other members from the two parties.
US lawmakers to talk about China, AI and more
According to a source who spoke with Axios, the primary purpose of the delegation’s trip is to listen to high-level executives and gain insights into their perspectives on various issues.
The trip is “intended to just hear mostly from [executives] about how they’re thinking about various issues,” a source told Axios.
The delegation aims to discuss defensive and offensive strategies, including how to out-compete with AI. Further, the source says that all conversations will be private.
Lawmakers will meet with Disney CEO Bob Iger to discuss the company’s China relationship, followed by meetings with Hollywood producers, executives, and screenwriters. On Thursday, they will meet with Silicon Valley leaders, including Microsoft and Alphabet executives, as well as Palantir and Scale AI executives.
Apple CEO’s trip to China could drive the discussion
The meeting with Tim Cook is scheduled for Friday. Cook just returned from a trip to China last week, his first one since the pandemic.
During his trip to China, Cook put a heavy emphasis on strong relations with China. Apple CEO met with China’s commerce minister, Wang Wentao, where they discussed strategies to stabilise industrial and supply chains. Additionally, Cook delivered a speech at the China Development Forum and applauded the 30-year “symbiotic” relationship between China and Apple.
