Apple iOS 16.1, iPadOS 16, Android security patch and more: A list of important updates in October

October was a busy month for technology giants including Apple, Google, Meta and Microsoft, among others. Apart from announcing their quarterly results, major tech companies also rolled out software updates and security fixes for their devices. These include iOS 16.1 for iPhones, iPadOS 16 for iPads, Android security fixes and Microsoft’s updates for Windows, among others. Here is a rundown of all the major updates rolled out to users in October.
Apple iOS 16.1 for iPhones
Apple released iOS 16.1 with various features, including iCloud Shared Photo Library, Live Activities, Fitness+, Clean Energy Charging and a few bug fixes. These bug fixes include four flaws in WebKit that powers the Safari browser. These four bugs also included two flaws which could have led to code execution if exploited.
Apple iOS 16 for iPads
Apple released iPadOS 16 in October after delaying it by a month to coincide with the launch of the latest iPad models. The update includes features in the Messages app, smart tools in Mail including an improved search function in the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, Family photos on iCloud Shared Photo Library in the larger variant and security fixes, among others.
October Android Security Update
Google released the Android Security Bulletin for October. The update fixed 15 flaws in the Framework and System and 33 issues in the kernel and vendor components. The update was released for Google Pixel smartphones and Samsung also rolled out the security patch to Samsung Galaxy S21 and S22 series of smartphones.

Google Chrome 107
Google rolled out an incremental to Chrome 106 in the form of Chrome 107 in the last week of October. The update fixed various bugs and security issues that were reported in the previous version. It also brought various features including enhancements for video calling apps on desktop, hardware decoding for High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) format resulting in better performance, simpler login workflow and enabling import of passwords from another password manager or browser.
Microsoft Windows and Edge security patch
Microsoft dropped a fix for 84 flaws which contained 13 critical issues. As per the company, the issues include two zero-day vulnerabilities out of which one was actively exploited in attacks and one was publicly disclosed. The company also fixed 12 other security issues in Microsoft Edge at the starting of the month.
Zoom client for meeting
Zoom also patched several issues in the app. These issues include a flaw in its Zoom client for meetings, which was marked having high severity. “If a malicious Zoom meeting URL is opened, the link may direct the user to connect to an arbitrary network address, leading to additional attacks including session takeovers,” Zoom had explained.
