Apple’s 3nm chip goes into production this week

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is beginning the 3nm node process this week, and to mark this occasion, the chip manufacturer will be hosting a ceremony at the Fab 18, Southern Taiwan Science Park (STSP), the plant where it is starting the commercial production. And Apple will be one of the first customers to have ordered 3nm chips.
TSMC begins 3nm chip production on December 29
DigiTimes reports that TSMC will begin the production of 3nm chips on December 29 and discuss its ambition for a 3nm process node. Analysts suggest that the company wants to publicise its intention that Taiwan will remain the hub for research development despite the investments overseas.
The chip manufacturer recently announced a new plant in Arizona, US, and plans to build one more. These two plants will manufacture 4nm chips starting in 2024, with a plan to begin 3nm chip production also.
Apple to come with 3nm chips first
The first company to order the 3nm chips is none other than Apple, which according to the rumours, would bring the 3 nm-based M2 Pro in 2023, powering the latest batch of MacBook Pros and Mac minis. Then, we can expect the A17 and the M3 lineup to be based on the enhanced 3nm process, which might be released later this year.
Currently, the A16 Bionic chip is built on the 4nm process node, but as per TSMC it is an enhanced 5nm process. Similarly, the M2 is also built on the same enhanced 5nm process.
Earlier this year, Samsung started production using the 3nm process, and a month later, it shipped the first batch of 3nm chips, ahead of TSMC.
However, TSMC could take the lead when it ships the first batch of 3nm chips with Apple MacBook Pro and Mac mini in the coming months, reaching the customers earlier than Samsung.
