Apple’s iPhone display roadmap ‘leaked’: What to expect with future iPhones

It seems like we have to wait a little longer to get the 120Hz ProMotion display on all the models of iPhone. The 120Hz ProMotion display, first introduced with the iPhone 13 Pro series, has remained exclusive to the ‘Pro’ iPhone models and will be for two more years to come.
In a tweet, Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants, outlines the roadmap for iPhones, showing how the display on the future iPhones would change.
In the roadmap, Young suggests that the non-Pro iPhone models would switch to the pill-shaped Dynamic Island this year with the iPhone 15 series. However, it may not be until 2025 when the vanilla iPhone models will switch to the faster 120Hz LTPO panels, thus the ProMotion displays.
With ProMotion displays, the non-Pro models would also gain support for the always-on display.
So, the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus could be the first non-Pro iPhones to come with the ProMotion display.
This is when we may get an “all-screen” iPhone
While the non-Pro iPhones would switch to 120Hz ProMotion displays, the Pro Models would come with an under-display FaceID but will still retain the circular cutout for front-facing cameras.
There has been a change from Young’s original prediction, which was shared in May 2022, regarding the timeline for implementing under-panel ‌ FaceID‌ technology on iPhones. Initially, the 2024 iPhone 16 Pro models were expected to be the first to feature this technology. However, in a recent announcement, Young cited “sensor issues” as the reason for a one-year delay.
It will not be before 2027, we get to see the all-screen iPhone. Young suggests that the Pro iPhone models in 2027 would switch to both under-display FaceID and under-display camera, which would give iPhones a true “all-screen” appearance.
In the same year, non-Pro iPhones will switch to the under-display FaceID technology, which will come to Pro iPhone models in 2025.
