Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard joked with a Sky Sports reporter following the Gunners’ 4-2 win away to Brighton on New Years’ Eve. The playmaker scored a deflected strike to get his side’s second, and then teed up Gabriel Martinelli for the fourth goal as Mikel Arteta’s side went seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

Bukayo Saka’s corner was initially cleared by the Brighton defence towards the edge of the box, where Odegaard ran onto the ball and hit it into the ground which bamboozled goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, as the Gunners’ lead was doubled.

While alongside Saka after the game, he was questioned over his goal as the reporter claimed his goal was not one of his finest, Odegaard was quick to hit back with a quick joke: “I think it was a great goal,” as he and Saka both laughed and the England man sarcastically said it was a “fantastic finish.”

Odegaard added: “It was another important goal, and happy to help the team with goals and assists, that’s what I want to do, help the team as much as possible so I am very happy to do that again.

Descibing his assist, Odegaard added: “I saw there was a lot of space in behind and our wingers are so quick. It is not easy to stop Gabriel Martinelli in that position.”

After draws from Manchester City and Newcastle, Arsenal sit with a commanding lead at the top of the table and Saka believes that they have a big opportunity to win the title. “Sounds amazing,” he said of the gap at the top. “Of course at the start of the season if you asked us if we wanted this we would bite your hand off. We are really happy.

“It is a great opportunity we have – a great place we have put ourselves in. We are not focusing on that now. We are focusing on the next game because we know how well Newcastle have been playing.”
