Arsenal could boost Mikel Arteta’s hopes of guiding the club back to the Champions League with two signings this month. There are two weeks left of the January transfer window, and the Gunners have interestingly been linked with two players.

The strongest speculation relates to Juventus midfielder Arthur, who Arsenal have agreed terms with ahead of a short loan.

And after his Atletico Mineiro exit, ex-Chelsea striker Diego Costa is also the topic of links to the Emirates Stadium.

Goal report that Arsenal have approached Costa over the prospect of returning to the Premier League.

Express Sport looks at how Arsenal could line up in the second half of the season if Arteta bolsters two areas of his side by signing both Costa and Arthur.

Goalkeeper: Ramsdale

Aaron Ramsdale has firmly surpassed Bernd Leno as Arteta’s first-choice goalkeeper and will continue to receive more game time if he keeps up his form.

Ramsdale has contributed to significant defensive improvement from the Gunners in recent months and is proving to be a risk that has paid off.

Defence: Tomiyasu, White, Gabriel, Tierney

Takehiro Tomiyasu is another summer signing who has proven to be a massive hit at the Emirates so far this term.

Ben White was also questioned due to his £50million price tag, but he is forming a solid partnership with Gabriel in the heart of the defence.

This season, Kieran Tierney has had to fend off competition from Nuno Tavares, but he should finish the campaign as Arteta’s first-choice right-back and is a potential captaincy candidate.

Midfield: Partey, Arthur; Smith Rowe

Thomas Partey should slot straight back into the midfield once he returns from the Africa Cup of Nations within the next month.

Granit Xhaka let Arteta down with his reckless red card at Liverpool earlier this week and could be replaced by Arthur, should the Gunners complete a deal for his services.

Emile Smith Rowe and Martin Odegaard can continue to rotate in the attacking midfield position, with both showing new levels to their Premier League careers this season.
