Ollie Hoare and Jessica Hull broke Australian indoor mile records on a sparkling weekend for the star middle-distance runners – and Hoare’s blitzing performance achieved a 96-year first.

As Hoare posted 3:50.83 in a winning run to take the Australian men’s record off Charlie Hunter at the world’s premier indoor track-and-field meet, Hull finished in fourth as she registered 4:24.06 to steal the national women’s benchmark from Sarah Jamieson.

Hoare’s triumph in the men’s Wanamaker Mile saw an Australian win the event for the first time in its 96-year history.

The 25-year-old now also lays claim to the 11th-fastest indoor mile in history after his exceptional run at New York’s Millrose Games.

Hoare surged away from Tokyo Olympics 1500m bronze medallist Josh Kerr over the final bend, backing up his breakthrough 2021 campaign with another scintillating performance.

“I have been wanting to win this prestigious event ever since I came to college in the US,” said Hoare, a former University of Wisconsin athlete.

“To be able to get an Aussie on that trophy was a cool thing to accomplish.”

Hoare looms as a giant threat to his rivals in a crammed 2022 schedule, as he looks ahead to the World Athletics indoor championships, World Athletics outdoor championships and Commonwealth Games.

The New South Welshman qualified for the 1500m final at the Tokyo Games and finished in 11th, as two Australian men competed in an Olympic decider over that distance for the first time since John Landy and Merv Lincoln at Melbourne 1956. Stewart McSweyn joined Hoare in the final and collected seventh.
