Australia vs West Indies cricket news 2022, Pat Cummins out with injury for Adelaide match

Australian Test captain Pat Cummins has been ruled out of the second match against West Indies with injury.

The fast bowler suffered a quad strain during the summer’s opening Test in Perth, and on Wednesday was ruled out of Thursday’s Adelaide match.

Scott Boland will come into the line-up as replacement, while Steve Smith will captain.

Smith is the obvious man to don the armband despite Josh Hazlewood bizarrely being handed the captaincy for an ODI against England last month, when Cummins was rested.

Boland, 33, made his Test debut last summer and stunned England with figures of 6-7 in the second innings in Melbourne.

He played two more matches during that Ashes series and his Test average is a ridiculous 9.55 with 18 wickets.

His inclusion means Lance Morris and Michael Neser – who were added to the squad on Monday – will most likely not play at Adelaide Oval.

One of them will now only play the match if Australia chooses to rest either Mitchell Starc or Josh Hazlewood.

Cummins also missed the Adelaide Test last summer when he tested positive for COVID-19 before the game.

Neser was handed his baggy green then to replace Cummins in what has been his one and only Test math to date.

He took 1-33 and 1-28 against England with the pink ball.
