Australia has created history by winning the men’s World Rugby Sevens eSries for the first time.

The Aussies beat Samoa 21-7 to finish third in the Los Angeles tournament which was enough to pip South Africa and Fiji for the title.

It caps a golden year for the Australian sevens teams, with the women’s side also winning the world title in May and then backing it up with Commonwealth Games gold in Birmingham.

“This reward is a reflection of the consistency that the boys have shown,” Australia coach John Manenti said.

“All the boys – not just these boys, a lot of others contributed, and it’s been a pretty amazing run. It’s very special (to win the men’s and women’s titles).

“Obviously Chucky (James Stannard) and I were involved with both programs, so it’s certainly nice to have the double.”

Corey Toole, Henry Paterson and Dietrich Roache scored the tries against Samoa as Australia became the fifth nation to win the world series since its inception in 1999.

New Zealand have won the title 13 times, South Africa and Fiji four times apiece and Samoa once.

“An absolute bunch of misfits who have worked so hard for each other,” commentator Rikki Swannell said.

“So connected, some plucked from club rugby throughout Australia and now champions on the world stage.”

Australian captain Nick Malouf was a proud man afterwards.

“I’m so happy, I don’t think it’s sunk in. A huge accomplishment for so much hard work,” Malouf said.

“It’s just fantastic for Australian rugby.

“We hope we made you proud and we love competing for you guys.”

New Zealand beat Fiji 28-21 in the Los Angeles final.
