Filletted from the resulting book by actress/singer Elizabeth McGovern, the play fails to gain ignition in spite of good performances from McGovern herself as Ava and Anatol Yusef as Evans and several of the famous men in her life, including Mickey Rooney, Artie Shaw and (ludicrously) Frank Sinatra.

Her job, says Gardner between scores of cigarettes and copious amounts of whisky, was to be “the woman men dream about.”

But no amount of fancy video designs by 59 Productions and some over elaborate staging can disguise the shapelessness of the script nor Gaby Dellal’s uninspired direction.

One of Hollywood’s greatest screen sirens, Ava Gardner deserves a far better tribute than this.
