West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Thursday slammed the police ‘inaction’ in Bagtui village in Rampurhat and ordered a 10-day special clean-up drive to uncover illegal arms and ammunition across the state. During her visit to the village, she ordered strict action, immediate police picketing and punishment of the accused involved in the crime.

Following her order, Trinamool block chief Anarul Sheikh, allegedly involved in the incident, was nabbed by police from the area.

Banerjee also announced compensation of ₹5 lakh each to the next of kin of the victims and ₹2 lakh each for rebuilding the damaged houses. She handed over cheques to the relatives of the deceased. Banerjee claimed the violence was a “big conspiracy” to malign the state and observed “the incident is condemnable and no one will be spared”.

During the hearing in the Calcutta High Court, the advocate general submitted violence case diary and informed that 31 CCTV cameras have been installed in the area. He also informed the court that the Central Forensic Science Laboratory team from Delhi has sought CRPF protection for visiting the site.

Police inspector Tridip Pramanik, posted as inspector-in-charge at Rampurhat PS, has been suspended with immediate effect for ‘dereliction of duty’.

Meanwhile, a Trinamool delegation met Union home minister Amit Shah in New Delhi to apprise him about the incident. The state BJP has formed a 5-member team which will submit its report to JP Nadda.
