Glenn Maxwell has taken a catch described by one of Australian cricket’s greatest fielders in history, Andrew Symonds, as “the best … in the BBL ever”.

Running back with the flight of the ball at mid-on during the Melbourne Stars’ match against the Brisbane Heat, the incredibly talented all-rounder stuck out his left arm at full stretch, reeling in the Kookaburra.

Then after hitting the deck, tumbling and springing to his feet in an instant, Maxwell still managed to have the ball firmly in the grip of his left hand.

Those in attendance at the MCG, commentators, Heat batter Sam Heazlett, Maxwell’s teammates and even the miracle man were left astonished at the catch.

Maxwell stopped in his tracks as soon as he returned to his feet, putting his right hand over his mouth in a state of extreme surprise and laughing in disbelief.

“That is the catch of the BBL,” said former Australia quick Brett Lee on Fox Cricket.

“I reckon that is one of the best catches I have seen in any form of cricket ever.

“That is a catch for the ages.”

Symonds raved about Maxwell’s catch.

“That is the best catch in the BBL ever,” Symonds said.

“There are different types of catches, but for degree of difficulty that is the best.”

Melbourne beat Brisbane by eight wickets, chasing the Heat’s total of 149 in just 13.4 overs.

Opener Joe Clarke top-scored for the Stars in a knock of 62 from 36 deliveries.

Maxwell shone with the bat, too, striking 37 from 30.
