The biennial auto show which was deferred due to the second wave of covid in February 2022, will now be held in January 2023.

According to several people in the know, a week-long show is likely to be held in the middle of January as opposed to February. The final dates for the show – 11-18 January 2023 – were finalized keeping in mind the global auto motor show calendar. SIAM was unavilable for comment.

The 2022 edition of the auto show to showcase the future potential of the Indian automotive industry was deferred due to uncertainties stemming from the outbreak of the pandemic. It was for the first time in decades that the motor show that invites over 100,000 visitors daily in a weeklong event was cancelled.

Globally, the Geneva Motor Show too has been cancelled for three years in a row from 2020 to 2022, the Tokyo Motor Show was cancelled for the first time in 67 years in 2021. The Paris Motor Show too will return in 2022 after 4 years.

Experts say, a strong tailwind in the marketplace, inability of automakers to participate in a major event in the country over the last three years and heightened excitement around electric vehicles is likely to make the upcoming 2023 show a successful one.

The platform is usually seen as an opportunity to showcase concepts and new technologies. With increased excitement for EVs and quick adoption of new age connectivity and ADAS features, the upcoming edition may turn into a unique event with a lot of new participants, especially on the EV front, informed people in the know.

Over time, a number of participants have decided to drop out of the event and the previous edition witnessed most of the two wheeler and commercial vehicle makers giving the show a miss on account of high cost of participation and falling automotive market. The show, however, was resurrected by some new players like Great Wall Motor, Haima Automobile, MG Motor and the VW Group – even as the event was overshadowed by fear of covid-19, which limited the Chinese visitors at the show.

Much like previous editions, in the upcoming edition, the top five car makers are expected to drive the excitement with the biggest floor space and the new range of products and new age powertrain technologies.

Auto Expo – The Motor Show 2022 was scheduled from 2-9 February at India Expo Mart, Greater Noida. But with the rising cases and uncertainties around covid, majority of the big participants were hesitant to go ahead with the event. Industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers Association in a statement in August 2021 had said, “Safety of exhibitors, visitors and all stakeholders involved and present at the Expo is the topmost priority for SIAM.”

The 15th edition of Auto Expo – The Motor Show 2020, was staged by SIAM from 7th to 12th February 2020 at IEML, Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Over 100 exhibitors participated in the show and unveiled more than 100 products that witnessed a footfall of over six lakhs people across age groups.
