birbhum: 10 burnt alive in violence following killing of Trinamool leader

In a gruesome violence in Birbhum district’s Rampurhat, at least 10 charred bodies, including two children and women, were recovered from Rampurhat’s Bagtui village on Tuesday after fire was set in ten houses following death of Trinamool deputy panchayat chief Bhadu Sheikh in a bomb blast last night. Several people have been arrested in connection with the incident, Birbhum police Superintendent said today.

West Bengal Police chief Manoj Malviya said the total number of death in the Rampurhat incident is eight. “We have found seven bodies inside the house. Three were injured and hospitalized. Out of them, one has died today. The situation is tense and we will see if it was a retaliation of teh people and fire was set in the houses as the Deputy Panchayat head had died,” Malviya told mediaperson.

A three-member SIT formed by the Bengal government led by ADG CID Gyanwant Singh and the SIT team include Meeraj Khalid and Sanjay Singh.

Tension prevails in the village while the CID and State Police are heading towards Rampurhat, local sources told ET. Trinamool Minister Firhad Hakim heading towards the spot.

“Investigation will start by the SIT team led by CID. I will reach the spot and get a clear picture about the incident,” Hakim told mediapersons.

A high-level meeting is on at state secretariat Nabanna, led by Chief Secretary H K Dwivedi and Home Secretary Gopalika on the issue of gruesome violence in Rampurhat Block 1 in Birbhum District. “The officer in-Charge and SDPO have been closed, ” Nabanna sources said.

The state government has directed to expedite the investigation, sources said.

Demanding resignation of the Chief Minister, BJP MLAs have walked out of the assembly.

“Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee must resign. We will not tolerate the death of the innocent people in the state,” Manoj Tigga, chief whip of state assembly, said.
