Mum-of-three Kate, Princess of Wales is a natural when it comes to children and building a rapport with them. Body language expert The Body Language Guy analysed her interactions with two youngsters during a visit to Colham Manor Children’s Centre.

The Body Language Guy stated: “Now we all know that listening is very important and we have to look into the eyes of the person we are listening to – that’s common sense.”

Observing how the royal crouched to the young boy’s level to maintain eye contact, the expert stated: “Catherine is doing that exact thing right now.”

He noted that importantly, when Akeem pointed in a different direction, Kate followed his with her eyes and turned her head.

Indeed, she “turns around completely to see what he is talking about”.

She combined eye-contact with genuine interest in following what the three-year-old wanted to communicate.

The Body Language Guy continued: “Catherine is signalling that what he is saying is important to her by turning around fully and showing interest in what he wants to communicate.”

Next, he noted that Kate uses “touch” to create a relationship with Akeem – indeed, “touch is the most important of all the senses”.

Here Kate was pictured holding the boy’s hand as well as putting a hand on his coat.

When Kate gave Akeem her Remembrance Day poppy, she “presented it to him like it was something important”, rather than just handing it to him.

After meeting Akeem, Kate met Akeem’s sister, again crouching down to her level.

By touching her arm for a brief second while she did this, Kate was able to create a “connection” and “rapport” with her too.

She also gave her her “undivided attention” while saying hello and asking her name, not turning her head or allowing herself to get “distracted”.

The expert said: “She’s making the girl feel like she’s a protagonist right now and that’s how we should make people feel – like they have our undivided attention.”

The Body Language Guy explained that Kate’s willingness to give the young girl her “undivided attention” is very rare.

He said: “Nowadays that is a gift, that is a privilege having the attention of someone.”

He explained that while everyone wants to share their own thoughts and ideas, not many people are willing to listen and “much less people are willing to give you their complete time”.

“This moment – the present moment – is yours, nobody does that.”
