Chief minister Basavaraj Bommai said on Monday that the government will deal with the use of loudspeakers at places of worship as per the court orders, hours after sections of pro-Hindu activists launched a Hanuman Chalisa campaign to counter any loud azaan from mosques.

There is already a Supreme Court judgment on the subject and there are also high court orders on how to implement the SC judgment, the CM told the media in Bengaluru, while pledging that the government will enforce court orders in a “most cordial atmosphere”.

“We are observing what is going on in other states,” Bommai said. He said he has asked his officials to strictly implement the court orders.

The police kept a tight vigil around mosques to prevent any provocation as Hubballi has barely recovered from riots triggered by a communal post. The violence disrupted economic activities for a few days, scarring the city’s reputation as the government was projecting it as a hub for consumer durables manufacturing.

In Mysuru, Sri Rama Sene founder Pramod Muthalik and his followers launched a Hanuman Chalisa campaign by singing bhajans at a temple loudly and claimed hundreds of temples across the state have chanted the verses in praise of Lord Hanuman. This led to police stepping up security around mosques to quell any potential trouble.

In Bengaluru, the police thwarted bids to launch loud bhajans by taking some activists into custody as the government tried to maintain calm even as BJP endorsed demands against use of loudspeakers at places of worship.
