Brian May, 75, has described his “anger and disgust” at the way the current Conservative government has conducted itself in a rage-fuelled rant on Instagram. In view of his 3.1 million followers, the Queen musician called for a general election and suggested the reinstatement of Boris Johnson, 58, as Prime Minister would be “the last straw”.

Yesterday Liz Truss, 47, told the public she would be stepping down as PM and that her replacement would be appointed in the space of just one week.

However, many people across the country are now calling for a general election, including the Queen guitarist.

“This morning I feel anger and disgust,” May began in a furious rant, as he posted a picture of an article discussing who might be the next Conservative Prime Minister with a big red cross through it.

“The appalling, inexcusable ruination of our country. That’s what ALL these ‘candidates’ stand for,” he wrote.

A new leader is to be selected next Friday and some names have already been discussed for her replacement.

Aside from former PM Johnson, other high-profile figures being discussed include former Chancellor Sunak, who was beaten in the last Conservative leadership contest.

Leader of the House of Commons Penny Mordaunt has also been mentioned, while Defence Secretary Ben Wallace has ruled himself out.

Jeremy Hunt, who was appointed as Chancellor of the Exchequer six days ago, has confirmed he will not be entering the leadership race.

Meanwhile, Labour are calling for a general election, with opposition leader Sir Keir Starmer stating: “They do not have a mandate to put the country through yet another experiment; Britain is not their personal fiefdom to run how they wish.”

“The British public deserve a proper say on the country’s future.

“They must have the chance to compare the Tories’ chaos with Labour’s plans to sort out their mess, grow the economy for working people and rebuild the country for a fairer, greener future.

“We must have a chance at a fresh start. We need a general election – now,” he added.
