British expats in Spain: Spanish people share their view of Britons in the country | Travel News | Travel

Spain is one of the most popular destinations in the world for British expats. The sunny Mediterranean country is also one of the UK’s top tourist destinations.

One Reddit user asked Spanish people: “Which personality traits would you attribute to British people?”

One person went on a rant saying: “First of all, as individuals we see you as friendly and extroverted people.

“But, as a society, we do not have such a good image. Our image of British society is terrible.

“Rude, fake politeness, a lot of sorry, excuse me, thank you all, but that’s all the politeness you’ll get.

“They can be telling you to f* off, and think that a please and thank you will fix the offence.

“When they come to Spain, they are alcoholics. People from no other country pass out as much as Brits do when they come to Spain.

“They are disrespectful. They are always complaining about everything from Spain.

“There have also been many complaints against Spanish hotels about a supposed food intoxication (poisoning) in order not to pay what they owed.

“They don’t make the tiniest effort to understand Spanish and they will overlook you for not speaking English.

DON’T MISS

“We are taught to mind our Ps and Qs. We become very good at adding a please and thank you wherever it fits in a sentence.”

Another Spanish commenter said: “On a national level, you have a bad reputation, kind of ‘lads on tour’ image.

“In a one to one relationship you are just fine people but as a collective the culture clashes are constant.”

While drinking is common in Spain, stories of British binge drinking in Spanish resorts have hit the headlines many times.

Another Spanish person added: “One of the main reasons they come to Spain is to be drunk 24/7. I know not everybody is like this, of course, but the majority of Brits who come here are like this.”

However another said they thought British people were “tolerant” of other cultures and “friendly”.

Magaluf, once a popular British party destination in the Spanish Balearics, has recently announced plans to change its image.

While it still hopes to attract British tourists, it has introduced a ban on party boats, all you can drink deals and pub crawls.
