Energy bills have been increasing in recent months, and the Ofgem price cap is set to rise this weekend. While Prime Minister Liz Truss has stepped in to provide assistance with the upcoming “price freeze”, people will still want to take action to lower their bills.

British Gas has shared 10 tips designed to help people start to cut these costs as much as possible.

Firstly, the provider suggests making sure one’s laundry loads are totally full when undertaking the washing.

The company explained half-load settings save very little energy, and as a result, fewer and fuller loads are likely to be more efficient.

When it comes to using the dishwasher or boiler, British Gas recommends making use of the eco setting.

Many people will fill the kettle right up when making a cup of tea or coffee, but as a country, it means wasting around £68million in energy a year.

British Gas states by filling one’s kettle only to the level needed, it could save up to a third of the energy a person has been using.

Next, people may wish to make the switch to an LED lightbulb, rather than an older model.

Traditional bulbs are extremely inefficient, whereas their LED counterparts are efficient and last longer, proving less wasteful.

This winter, people could switch to using their microwave more so than their oven or stove.

The microwave, and a slow cooker if a person has one, are considered to be amongst some of the most energy-efficient kitchen appliances a person can own.

British Gas suggests people could save about £60 a year on their electricity bills, simply by unplugging their chargers.

As soon as a device is fully charged, the provider encourages people to get into the habit of unplugging it – and this could also prolong battery life.

Closing one’s curtains at night can help people to retain the heat their home has gathered in the day.

However, British Gas warns people should try not to drape their curtains over radiators, as this could have the opposite effect.

Turning down the temperature, even slightly, on a washing machine could make a huge difference.

The provider states there is often “no need” to run a washing machine any higher than 30 degrees, which could help to save energy.

Finally, something which could make a huge difference for Britons is updating their heating system.

British Gas added: “New boiler models are impressively more efficient with energy and can make a real difference on your monthly bills, saving you up to £580 a year.”

Some providers have payment methods, which can allow Britons to spread the cost of the installation.

Overall, small changes could help people to take a step in the right direction when it comes to managing their bills.
