Ceiling fans are almost the most basic and simplest electric appliances in any home. It is also a must-have home appliance for summer. But, despite its simplicity, things can get complicated whether you are buying a fan for the first time or looking to replace the existing ones in your home.
Also, like every other appliance out there, fans too have changed with new technology and features.
So, to help you choose the right fan for your home and as per your need, we have put together a couple of tips for you.
Price
The first thing you need to finalise is how much you want to spend on a ceiling fan. Undoubtedly, fans are available in a wide range of price brackets. You can find one for as low as Rs 1,000 and it can go all the way up to Rs 10,000 depending upon the features it has to offer.
Fan size
Before getting started with what size is best suited for your room. It is important to understand how the size of a fan affects the airflow.
The bigger the fan, the less forceful air you’ll get but it will have better air distribution and the air will feel more breezy. On the other hand, smaller fans have better airflow with more force.
Now, let’s get back to which size of the fan is suitable for your room.

Room size Fan size
Under 50sq.ft. Up to 36-inch
Between 50 to 70 sq.ft. Up to 42-inch
Between 71 to 150 sq.ft. Up to 48-inch
Between 150 to 250 sq.ft Up to 54-inch
Above 250 sq.ft. Two or more fans are required

Height of the fan
It is also important to mount a fan at the right height. Simply put, if the ceiling height is too much and you’ve mounted a fan using a small rod, then you won’t be able to feel the airflow at all. It is recommended that the fan should be mounted at a height of up to 9 feet above the floor.
Motor technology
Motor technology has also improved over the years. Modern fans come with Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) motors which are not only more efficient but also long-lasting over conventional motor technology. But, these fans are slightly expensive compared to fan powered by regular motors.
Rotation Per Minute (RPM) and CMM
It is important to check the RPM and CMM while buying a new fan. The RPG stands for revolution per minute and represents the maximum speed of the fan. The CMM, on the other hand, represents the ratio of the amount of air discharged and the area covered.
Blades
Blades are another important factor to consider when buying a new fan. Fans today are available with up to 7 blades. Fans with 3 blades are most common and are also relatively affordable. Also, note that the increased number of blades also increases the price of the dan. Also, aluminium blades are more recommended over sheet metal or wood.
Do note that more blades result in quieter operations, but they also reduce the airflow of the fan.
Additional features
Fans have become modern too, just like other home appliances. Fans can also be fancy with built-in lights, and speakers with Bluetooth connectivity. But fans today are also available with remote control and even IoT fans are quickly getting popular, although the options are still limited.
So, check whatever you want to add to your fan. But, we recommend keeping it as simple as possible.
Aesthetics and interior
Fans aren’t just the means of propelling the air in the room. They also act as an important element in the room. Fans are available in multiple colours, designs, and shapes. Do keep your interior design in mind before making the purchase.
