Chelsea boss Potter flirts with Rafael Leao transfer after Ronaldo and Nkunku answers | Football | Sport

Chelsea head coach Graham Potter has heaped praise on AC Milan star Rafael Leao, fuelling speculation that the Blues could launch a January move for the attacker. The west London club made a late bid for the Portuguese forward in the transfer window only to see their bid rejected, but Potter’s comments suggest they could revive their interest in the future.

The 23-year-old caught the eye of the club’s ambitious owners after contributing 19 goals and assists in the Italian top flight last season, helping the Rossoneri clinch their first Scudetto in a decade. And the Portugal international has set Serie A alight again this season with four goals and four assists in seven league matches, with another two goal assists in the Champions League for Stefano Pioli’s side.

Milan responded by quoting his £126million (€150m) release clause in full, forcing Chelsea to look elsewhere for attacking reinforcements. The Blues eventually signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Barcelona for £12m, but the Gabonese striker is viewed as a short-term option.

But American owner Todd Boehly, still working as interim sporting director, has been eyeing up another bid for Leao in January to help kickstart Potter’s reign.
