Chelsea ‘contact’ Jose Mourinho as Todd Boehly thinks appointment could unleash two stars | Football | Sport

Chelsea have reportedly made contact with Jose Mourinho over a sensational return to Stamford Bridge for what would be his third spell in charge. The Blues’ hierarchy, including co-owner Todd Boehly, supposedly believe that the current Roma boss could bring the best out of Chelsea’s Portuguese-speaking contingent – namely Joao Felix and Thiago Silva.

Since Graham Potter’s sacking at the weekend, Chelsea have been hard at work behind the scenes building up a shortlist of potential replacements. There is nothing short about the list currently under consideration, however, as Boehly and co look to interview a range of contenders before coming to a final decision.

According to Relevo, Mourinho is the latest name to be added to the list and Chelsea have gone as far as making contact with the 60-year-old. Currently in charge of Roma, Mourinho already has two spells at Stamford Bridge under his belt with the most recent stint ending in 2015.

The Blues supposedly feel that his prospective appointment would bring the best out of Felix and Silva – two of the most talented players in their current ranks. Felix is on loan until the end of the season but the club are thought to be keen on signing him permanently.

Several years in La Liga with Real Madrid is also touted to help Mourinho communicate with Chelsea’s sizeable group of Spanish-speaking stars including Marc Cucurella, Cesar Azpilicueta, Enzo Fernandez and Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Mourinho’s last job in the Premier League was a disappointing one as he was sacked by Tottenham in 2021. Before that, he had a spell at Manchester United which divided opinion, although his stock has been on the rise again since taking charge of Roma.

Mourinho is far from the only name in contention to replace Potter on a permanent basis. Ex-Barcelona boss Luis Enrique flew into London for talks earlier this week and is believed to have impressed the Chelsea board.

Axed Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann is also thought to be among the favoured candidates, while there have also been murmurs of contact with Mauricio Pochettino, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte.
