Torvill and Dean are back on our screens tonight for a brand-new series of ITV’s celebrity skating competition ‘Dancing on Ice’. The legendary duo melted the nation’s hearts on the ice with their gold medal-winning ‘Boléro’ routine at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo. The pair will once again be on the ‘Dancing on Ice’ judging panel tonight, alongside new addition Oti Mabuse and returning judge Ashley Banjo.

Among the highlights of this year’s crop of famous faces are Happy Mondays maraca man Bez and former ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ pro Brendan Cole.

The pair will be among the first six celebrities to take to the rink tonight, along with Sally Dynevor, Kimberly Wyatt, Ria Hebden and Kye Whyte.

The other six stars, Stef Reid, Liberty Poole, Ben Foden, Regan Gascoigne, Rachel Stevens and Connor Ball, will perform next week.

Torvill and Dean will be on hand to offer the celebrities their decades of experience, which includes their five victories at the world professional championships.

However, the pair also had bitter rows behind the scenes, with Dean reportedly being harsh on his partner during training.

In unearthed footage from a fly-on-the wall documentary, Dean urged a tearful Torvill to “go home and come back” after she broke down on the ice.

His outburst came during a fiery row with his ice dancing partner in the run-up to them competing at Winter Olympics in Lillehammer in 1994.

Dean’s anger at Torvill for failing to grasp aspects of their latest routine was captured in a BBC documentary released that year entitled ‘Facing the Music: The Return of Torvill and Dean’.

In the film Dean says: “Do you want to go home and come back and see if we can start again?”

Dean says: “It’s no good f****ing crying. I’ve got no sympathy. No, don’t cry on me.”

The ice skating star later addressed his tough stance towards his dance partner in a 2007 interview with the Financial Times.

He said: “I do the talking and she does the listening. She is far more laid-back and easy-going and will follow rather than lead. I’m the other way round – I need to lead.”

He told the publication he felt anxious when “things are out of his control. Not knowing circumstances.”

After Torvill and Dean’s triumphs in the 1984 Winter Olympics and at other competitions, the pair turned professional.

In the 1994 Games, they managed to secure a bronze medal.

A rule change had allowed the pair to compete despite them being professional, however they were punished for moves considered illegal by the judges.

‘Dancing on Ice’ airs on ITV tonight from 6:30pm – 8pm.
