Collingwood, Richmond, Darcy Moore, contract, money, how much, Kane Cornes

Port Adelaide great Kane Cornes has doubled down on his criticism of Darcy Moore following the grim performance of the big-money Collingwood defender against Richmond.

Tigers spearhead Tom Lynch dominated Moore in Richmond’s 27-point win over Collingwood at the MCG on Saturday, racking up six goals and 25 possessions.

Moore’s poor showing against the Tigers followed similar outings against Essendon and the Gold Coast Suns, which led to Cornes torching the backman on Nine’s Footy Classified.

Cornes has long been a knocker of long-term contracts – and Moore’s Collingwood deal was a point of focus as the former Port Adelaide midfielder shredded the 26-year-old on Sunday.

“When you take a six-year deal and you take $900,000 a year and you are spoken about as the next captain, you don’t get any get-outs, you don’t get any let-offs. And Darcy Moore yesterday shouldn’t be let off for the performance,” Cornes said on Nine’s The Sunday Footy Show.

“He’s got to be better… we love the attacking flair, we love your ability to intercept, we love the drive you give. But if you’re a defender, you actually have to defend. That’s your job and I think it’s a massive get-out for modern defenders that they don’t actually play on anyone.”

Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd backed up Cornes, saying: “How bad was the lack of intensity from Darcy Moore?”.

Richmond and Western Bulldogs icon Nathan Brown believes the All-Australian has changed his game.

“I think Darcy Moore used to play a lot closer to his player,” Brown said.

“You could see him just getting the fist in at the final moment. That’s when he’s at his best.

“At the moment there’s too much of a leg rope.”

Moore in April inked a six-year deal to tie himself to Collingwood until the end of 2028.

His re-signing was seen a massive boost to the Magpies under the reign of new coach Craig McRae.

Moore has played 109 senior games since debuting in 2015.
