Hamza Yassin, best known for his work on Countryfile and Springwatch, has revealed he was “nervous” to work with celebrities including Death in Paradise star Ben Miller, Martin Clunes, Reverend Richard Coles and politician Sayeeda Warsi on his Channel 4 show, Scotland: Escape to the Wilderness.

The show, which aired on More 4 in November, followed Hamza and the celebrities on an exploration of Scotland.

The celebrities were taken out of their comfort zone and each forced to strip away their finery as they braved the elements and got up close and personal to nature.

However, Hamza, who as a wildlife cameraman is well equipped to tackle life outdoors, has admitted he was anxious to meet the stars.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, the host explained: “We were all nervous, me and the celebrities…We were all nervous to meet each other.

“More so for me because these are people that we know and see on TV, but, once I met them you realise that they are just humans.

“Usually when we see celebrities they are in their prime, at their best.

“In reality, if you take them out of their comfort zone, i.e. put them in a tent and get them to feed animals they don’t like, when you have spent three days with them you get to experience and know them as a human, as themselves.”

The heart-warming show was a hit with viewers with many praising Hamza for the relationships he had built with the celebrities during their trip.

This weekend, Hamza will be taking part in the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch and has filmed a special episode of his podcast, Get Birding, to encourage the public to get involved.

On why he thinks it is important, Hamza explained: “Birds for me is like the gateway into mother nature. It is the best way to start.

“When you sit for that hour just looking at birds, it gives you the chance to look, see and relax.

“You don’t need binoculars, you don’t need tripods, all you need is a window that looks outside.”

The special episode of Get Birding will feature celebrity guests including Winterwatch’s Chris Packham, All Creatures Great and Small’s Samuel West and TV presenter Miranda Krestovnikoff.
