Craig Young quits as St George Illawarra chairman over Brett Finch letter saga

Craig Young has broken his silence on why he decided to quit as St George Illawarra chairman last month.

Young resigned from his post just days after it was revealed he used club letterhead to provide a character reference for fallen NRL player Brett Finch, who plead guilty in court to sharing child sexual abuse material.

Now, Young has spoken publicly about the saga in an interview with the Sunday Herald.

There’s been speculation Young was forced to quit by the Dragons, but he says that was not the case.

“I quit… it was purely my call,” Young said.

“I didn’t get forced out and I told you why. But I don’t back away from my support [for Finch].

“In fact, I’d do it all again tomorrow. You don’t desert your mates. That’s how I’ve lived my life and how I’ve brought up my kids. I have no problem with living like that.”

Young says he decided to quit so as not to be a distraction for the club and the players as they return for pre-season training.

“There were things to consider,” Young said.

“The players were coming back to training and I didn’t want to disrupt that. I needed to make sure it was not something they would have to deal with.”
