Australia has named a 16-player squad for the five-match Twenty20 international series against Sri Lanka next month.

The Aussies will host Sri Lanka at Sydney, Canberra, and Melbourne in five games played in the space of nine days from February 11.

Included on the list announced today is Ashes hero Travis Head.

The left-hand batter was named player of the series for his two centuries against England.

Head has played 16 T20 games for Australia, but hasn’t been seen in national colours in that format since July 2018.

“We saw the way that he played, and the tempo he played his Test cricket,” national selector George Bailey said.

“His domestic one-day record over the last couple of years has been phenomenal. One part of his game that he probably hasn’t had the continuity or time to fully focus on is his T20 cricket.

“He fits, he fits really well with what he can do.”

The big omissions from the squad are David Warner and Mitchell Marsh, who both played key roles in Australia’s T20 World Cup victory last year.

They have been rested with an eye to the tour of Pakistan in March.

Bailey says selectors have been largely happy to stick with the core group of players that won the World Cup.

“I think certainly that squad of 15 remains very highly regarded,” he said.

“There will be natural opportunities through the fact that injuries occur, and players will continue to improve and push their case.”

AUSTRALIA SQUAD: Aaron Finch (c), Ashton Agar, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Moises Henriques, Josh Inglis, Ben McDermott, Glenn Maxwell, Jhye Richardson, Kane Richardson, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade, Adam Zampa.
