Good evening, and welcome to our coverage of a big night of FIFA World Cup action, with the Socceroos kicking things off with their do-or-die clash with Tunisia.
Australia’s second Group D match kicks off at 9pm (AEDT) and Graham Arnold’s men at very least need a draw, but more likely a win, to keep their hopes alive for qualification to the round of 16.
In truth, Australia probably need a favour in the other Group D match to be played overnight. Ideally France will take care of Denmark (their match kicks off at 3am AEDT), leaving them on one point with one match to play. That would then mean that a draw tonight for the Socceroos would leave the door ajar for second place in the group, with Australia then needing to beat Denmark on Thursday morning (2am AEDT) kick-off, while needing France to do the job against Tunisia.
A better scenario is that the Socceroos find a way past Tunisia tonight, then face-off with Denmark needing just a draw to qualify.
All that is ahead of us, but the Tunisia match is the one all hopeful Socceroos fans had circled in the calendar.
The other matches to be played overnight are Poland v Saudia Arabia at midnight (AEDT) and Argentina v Mexico at 6am (AEDT).
