While fans know a lot about Marvel’s big slate of movies releasing in 2023, it seems like DC will have a comparatively quiet year with only two major movies confirmed to release so far.

While on one hand, the year will most likely start with the release of the Shazam sequel in Shazam! Fury of the Gods during the summer. Along with that, fans will also see the arrival of DC’s first live action Latinx superhero in Blue Beetle, which is slated to release on August 18.

The upcoming movie will be directed by Angel Manuel Soto of Charm City Kings fame. The protagonist in popular DC character Jaime Reyes will be played by Xolo Maridueña, who’s most notably known for his portrayal of Miguel Diaz on the Netflix show, Cobra Kai.

Following the announcement of the movie’s development, not much was known about it up until recently, when The Wrap broke the news about the other castings for the project.

The publication reported that Harvey Guillén, who plays Guillermo in the FX show What We Do in the Shadows will be joining Maridueña in an undisclosed role. Moreover, Brazilian actress Bruna Marquezine will be the female protagonist as the love interest of Maridueña’s Reyes, who goes by the name of Penny. Finally, Belissa Escobedo will also be part of the cast as Milagros Reyes, who is the younger sister of Jaime Reyes.

It’s unclear what the plot will revolve around as we have yet to hear any rumors or news about the movie’s setting. However, following Warner Bros. decision to change the movie’s release from streaming to theatres, it seems like the studio might have major aspirations, and it sure seems like they might have their next big blockbuster in the Blue Beetle.
