Flipkart was responding to the notice that was issued to the company on December 15. As per media reports, the police was not satisfied with the firm’s responses. It said that an Agra-based company sold the acid.

On December 14, two bike riders attacked a 17-year-old girl with an acid-like substance near Uttam Nagar minutes after she left her west Delhi home for school. Three suspects were arrested in connection with the case. “She has suffered 7-8% facial burns and her eyes have also been affected. She has been admitted to the burn ICU and is stable,” a doctor said.
Soon after the attack, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) sought an explanation from Flipkart regarding sale of acid on its online platform. The authority noted the easy availability of acid on the e-commerce platform and termed it dangerous, hazardous and unsafe for consumers.
The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) also issued notices to Amazon and Flipkart for the alleged sale of acid terming the easy availability of the substance a matter of grave concern. “DCW has learnt that the accused bought acid through ‘Flipkart’ & that acid is easily available on ‘Amazon’ & ‘Flipkart’ which is illegal,” DCW said in a letter.
Supreme Court ban on sale of acid
The Ministry of Home Affairs issued an advisory on ‘Measures to be taken to prevent acid attacks on people and for treatment and rehabilitation of survivors’ on August 30, 2013. The Supreme Court has banned the over-the-counter sale of the substance.
