Dick Van Dyke, 97, sparked major concern after being behind the wheel of a car crash, as fans feared for his safety and others argued that the crash was a valid argument to make more stringent regulations around elderly drivers. Now the Hollywood legend has spoken up in his first public sighting since the accident.

The Mary Poppins star assured fans that he is doing “pretty good” but admitted he’s “sore all over”.

He was spotted by paparazzi in a parking garage who asked how he was doing and what had happened in that car on that fateful day.

Dick explained: “The airbag did not deploy, so I just did a face plant right into the steering wheel and it just made me a little dumber.”

The actor continued with a morbid joke, adding: “I’m 97, all my friends are dead,” as reported by Daily Mail.

The Chitty Chitty Bang Bang star had been driving in the rain when the vehicle skidded and he lost control.

He was not sent to a hospital and rather picked up from the crash site by a friend and taken home to recover.

Sources told TMZ that the police officers requested Dick retake his driving test due to his age.

This is not Dick’s first brush with mortality in a car, as he was pulled from a far more worrisome crash nearly 10 years ago.

In August 2013, the actor was pulled from his Jaguar after it caught on fire on a Los Angeles freeway.

The hero of the day, Jason Pennington, told TMZ that he had seen the car filled with smoke on the side of the road and rushed to help as he spotted an elderly man still inside.

Although the actor was disorientated, the outlet reported that he didn’t require medical intention after that incident.
