World No.1 Novak Djokovic, who was not allowed to participate in the Australian Open since he has not taken a vaccine against Covid-19, would not have been able to play in the Tata Open too, had he wished to.
Serbian Djokovic was recently deported to Belgrade from Melbourne after he lost a court battle to participate in the year’s first Grand Slam despite a medical exemption. Prashant Sutar, Tournament Director of the Tata Open told mid-day that the world’s best tennis player would have to follow the law of the land in India as well.
“As a tennis fan, I love watching Djokovic play, but one needs to respect the rules of the country and in India, for us, every player, who will be participating, needs to be fully vaccinated. This is a government rule and we have to abide by all protocols, so there is no question of having any other rule,” said Sutar.
