Elon Musk hints at making an ‘alternative’ phone to iPhone and Android

It was always going to be a matter of time that Elon Musk came at loggerheads with two of the biggest companies in the world — Apple and Google. And while it hasn’t actually happened, Musk has hinted that he may have to create an alternative phone.
Why is Elon Musk talking about a ‘new’ phone
Both Apple and Google ask app developers to pay a certain commission — ranges between 15-30% — on all in-app transactions. Twitter is set to roll out (once again) the Twitter Blue or Verified Blue feature where users will have to pay $8 to use the service. Since this will be an in-app purchase, technically Twitter will have to pay that commission to Apple and Google. While Musk hasn’t been clear what he will do if and when that happens, a video podcast host in a tweet suggested that he makes an alternative phone to iOS and Android.
“If Apple & Google boot Twitter from their app stores, @elonmusk should produce his own smartphone. Half the country would happily ditch the biased, snooping iPhone & Android. The man builds rockets to Mars, a silly little smartphone should be easy, right?”
To this Musk replied, “ I certainly hope it does not come to that, but, yes, if there is no other choice, I will make an alternative phone.”
Can he really make an alternative phone?
Of course, he can. If you are the world’s richest man and have billions lying around, one can argue that you can do anything you want, including build an “alternative” phone. But will he realistically do it and make it work? We won’t be holding our breath over it. The idea itself doesn’t sound too radical but actually doing it and making it work will be far too difficult.
However, there can be a few workarounds that Musk and Twitter can follow to avoid paying Apple and Google. But it remains to be seen, how Musk deals with it as chances are the two tech giants won’t waiver from their App Store policies — even if the world’s richest man ‘threatens’ to build an alternative phone.
