Twitter’s new boss Elon Musk, whose bio read “Twitter Complaint hotline operator”, then invited people via a tweet to mention their complaints. It is apparent that he got several complaints because he later tweeted, “I love when people complain about Twitter … on Twitter.”
In one such complaint, a Twitter user with the handle @BiasedGirl complained about a “weird glitch in the verification badge.” She said she signed up for the new Twitter Blue subscription “to try the new features,” it took away her legacy verification and now her Blue check mark suggests she got verified because she signed up for Blue. “Which is not the case. I’ve been verified for years,” she added.
Musk replied by saying that there are “Far too many corrupt legacy Blue ‘verification’ check marks” so there is no choice “but to remove legacy Blue in coming months.”
It is to be noted that when you click on the “blue check mark” on profiles on the web or tap on it on smartphones, the accounts that have a legacy blue tick will show a message, “This account is verified because it’s notable in government, news, entertainment, or another designated category.”
Others’ verified profiles will display a message, “This account is verified because it’s subscribed to Twitter Blue.”
When we checked, @BiasedGirl handle, her blue check mark read, “This account is verified because it’s notable in government, news, entertainment, or another designated category.”
Engineer Jane Manchun Wong, who reports about Twitter features that are being tested, had previously said that there are “lots of inconsistencies here and there” about the message that is displayed after people click on verified accounts’ blue tick.
The Verge’s Tom Warren also highlighted this “bug in Twitter for iOS that sometimes shows you an account is legacy verified when it’s actually Twitter Blue verified.”
