Elon Musk on why work from home doesn’t make sense, “crazy hours” and more

It has been more than a whirlwind ever since Elon Musk splashed out $44 billion to acquire Twitter. The world’s richest man has been rather busy in ringing out changes at the social media platform. In the last couple of days there have been quite a few firsts for Twitter employees — they got the first official email from their new boss and also had their first hands-on meeting with him. According to a report by The Verge, Musk spoke about a plethora of things and Twitter employees had quite a few questions for him.
One of the burning questions was about working from home. Across the world, companies have adopted different ways of bringing back employees to office. Like Apple has a three-day work from office policy whereas quite a few others have gone for a different approach. Twitter, interestingly, at the peak of the pandemic was one of the first companies to say that there is absolutely no need to come to office and had an almost “indefinite” work from home policy. Not anymore as Musk has categorically said that work from home doesn’t work.
“It’s just my philosophy that people are way more productive when they’re in person because the communication is much better,” Musk told employees in a response to the question about working remotely.
An employee further asked Musk that is he asking people to come to office just to get on calls with the other offices. “We’re not going to lose access to teammates in-person anyways. Why are you asking this?”, an employee questioned. To this Musk responded, “Let me be crystal clear. If people do not return to the office when they are able to return to the office, they cannot remain at the company. End of story.”
The employee persisted with his line of questioning and said that even if people come to office and are in different offices then it’s not really an in-person gig. “Basically, if you can show up in an office and you do not show up at the office: resignation accepted. End of story,” Musk reportedly told the employee.

Musk also told employees that if somebody’s contribution is so significant that they can overcome the communication difficulties of being remote, then they should absolutely remain at Twitter. “But it will be a higher bar,” before adding that it will be “on an exception basis for exceptional people.” Musk said that he will understand that if this new scheme of things doesn’t work for some people but “that’s the new philosophy at Twitter.
Musk also said that he doesn’t expect people to put in “crazy hours”. “It’s not like some crazy number of hours. I’ll do crazy hours in office, but I’m not asking everyone else to do crazy hours in the office,” he told employees as per a report by The Verge.
