Emergency SOS via satellite arrives on iPhone 14 series: How does it work, where is it available, and more

Starting today, iPhone 14 series users in the UK and Canada will be able to use the Emergency SOS via satellite. However, users in Europe would have to wait a little longer, as the “Emergency SOS via satellite” feature would arrive in France, Germany, Ireland, and the UK, next month.
The “Emergency SOS via satellite” feature lets users get in touch with emergency responders in areas without cell reception or Wi-Fi connectivity. This could come in handy when a user is out on in the wild with no cell tower nearby and there is an emergency.
The entire iPhone 14 series – iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and the iPhone 14 Pro – comes with custom-engineered hardware and software, allowing them to communicate with the satellites. Users in the US (including the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico), Canda, and parts of Europe will be able to use the feature.
How does Emergency SOS via satellite work on iPhone
Apple has invested $450 million in Globalstar, fostering the company’s satellite connectivity infrastructure, which enables the Emergency SOS feature on iPhones. So, whenever a user requests emergency service via satellite, the message is sent to one of the 24 satellites traveling in the lower orbit, which transmits the message to on-ground stations, contacting the local emergency services.
How to use Emergency SOS via satellite
To request emergency assistance, the users would have to answer a short questionnaire, like what kind of emergency it is, how many people are there, who needs the help, and more. Then, users would require to point their iPhones toward the sky in line with the satellite. Thankfully there is a whole intuitive interface there to guide where exactly the Satelite is.
If you are not in some emergency and want to try out how it works, the demo mode lets you practice pin-pointing a satellite in the sky. So, when the real emergency comes, you will be ready.
Users can also share their location via satellite with their family and friends using the Find My app.
The service will remain free for the next two years, so if you bought an iPhone 14, you could use it for free for the next two years. However, note that the iPhone 14 models bought from China, Hong Kong, or Macao will not support satellite connectivity in the US, Canada, Europe, or elsewhere.
