England v Ireland, Afghanistan v New Zealand, Pat Cummins should be dropped says Mark Waugh

The fallout continues following Australia’s win over Sri Lanka in Perth.

There’s plenty of scrutiny over the form of opener Aaron Finch, and you can read more about that right here.

Fast bowler Pat Cummins is also under pressure, after another disappointing display with the ball.

Cummins took 0/46 against New Zealand in the opening game, and then 1/36 against Sri Lanka.

Of particular concern was his last over, the 20th of the innings in Perth, which contained two wides and ended up costing Australia 20 runs.

Former selector Mark Waugh didn’t mince words on RSN Breakfast, suggesting Cummins should be axed for Friday’s match against England.

“There’s players individually that just aren’t getting it right,” he said.

“Pat Cummins with the ball, there’s a massive question mark over him heading into the next game. Aaron Finch’s innings was torturous. It really was. I don’t think he can open the innings in the next game. If he’s going to play, he should bat somewhere down the order.

“It just doesn’t feel right. They’re not a happy camp and they look like they’re lacking confidence. They’re so nervous. I don’t know what the answer is.”

Waugh’s proposed change would allow Finch to bat in the middle order.

“I would bring Cameron Green in and I’d bring him in for Pat Cummins and I’d let Cam Green open the batting,” he said.

“That’s one change I would definitely make. I know it leaves your bowling a little short, but I think Cameron Green can bowl four overs as well as any of the other bowlers at the moment.”
