Erik ten Hag learns if Man Utd takeover will impact ‘bumper new £12m deal’ on the table | Football | Sport

Erik ten Hag will be rewarded for his excellent maiden season with Manchester United by having his contract extended until 2028, according to reports. The Dutchman has a fresh five-year deal ready to be signed worth a whopping £12million.

The new contract would see him pocket a £3m-a-year pay hike from his current contract which expires in June 2025. And according to The Sun, the offer will remain in place regardless of who takes over the Red Devils in the coming months.

The Glazers recently put the club up for sale after a turbulent 18 years in charge and value United at over £5billion. Second bids were recently lodged by the potential suitors with Ineos owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and former heir apparent of Qatar, Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani, the frontrunners to become the new majority shareholder.

There have been considerable concerns raised by United fans over the possibility of Jassim winning the bidding war, due to Qatar’s poor human rights record. Some supporters have launched a new campaign group ‘United against Sportswashing’ in the hopes of halting the Qatari approach and have joined forces with Newcastle United’s ‘No Saudi Toon’, who protested their club’s sale to a Saudi consortium in 2021.

A joint statement from the two protest groups read: “While NUFC play MUFC on Sunday, groups of fans from both clubs will be united in a common cause, regardless of the result on the pitch.

“We are Newcastle United and Manchester United fans standing together to call for an end to the sale of our historic clubs to states which use them to sportswash their human rights abuses.”

The Premier League recently updated their regulations as to who can own a football club, with tighter regulations, including “a new Disqualifying Event for human rights abuses, based on Global Human Rights Sanctions Regulations 2020”.

However, Jassim is not thought to be affected by the changes as he is bidding as an individual rather than representing the Qatari state. The Raine Group, which is overseeing the sale, are aiming to get back to bidders before the end of next week by which point a preferred bidder should have been named.

United face Newcastle this afternoon at St James’ Park as they look to cement their position inside the Premier League top four. The Red Devils find themselves in third place, two spots above Newcastle, who can leapfrog them in the table on goal difference with a win today.
