After a long wait, Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy is close to its release on Netflix. Based on a comic book series by Gerard Way, The Umbrella Academy is a time travel sci-fi show that premiered in 2019. The first season featured a total of ten episodes, and it became one of the most-streamed tv show that year. Then, in 2020, the second season surpassed the first season in terms of viewership, making it one of the most remarkable properties under Netflix’s banner. However, because of COVID, it took around two years for the creators to bring us Season 3 of Umbrella Academy. Since it has been too long, most fans might not remember the previous events. So, here’s a quick recap of both seasons of The Umbrella Academy to refresh your memories.

Season 1

The first season begins with 43 women giving birth, even though they weren’t pregnant at the time. This mysterious phenomenon grabbed the attention of Reginald Hargreeves, a billionaire and adventurer who adopts seven such children. As expected, these seven children get superpowers, so Hargreeves creates a group called “The Umbrella Academy.” The seven members of the group are Luther, Diego, Allison, Klaus, Number Five, Ben, and Vanya.

Everyone in the group fought crime as a group; however, everything changes when Number Five disappears as a child. Ben also died a few years back. However, Klaus has the ability to talk to the dead, so he can still talk to Ben. Everyone in the group had superpowers, except for Vanya, who never got any recognition from the other kids. Nevertheless, when Hargreeves dies, everyone gets together to pay their final respect to the man even though they hated him for being a terrible dad. On the same day, Number Five comes back from a portal.

Apparently, Number Five can travel through time, and one day he got stuck in the future. He stayed there for around forty years, but he came back in his 13-year-old body. Shockingly, the future where Number Five stayed was destroyed, and after returning to the present, he confirms that the apocalypse is only seven days away.

Of course, Number Five wants to stop the apocalypse, but two time-traveling assassins, Hazel and Cha-Cha, want to stop him. Number Five teams up with Klaus and starts investigating a prosthetic eye, which is the only clue for tracking down the person responsible for the apocalypse. However, the assassins capture Klaus and learn about Number Five’s plan.

Meanwhile, Klaus escapes Hazel and Cha-Cha’s grasp with the help of detective Eudora Patch, who later gets killed by Cha-Cha. Anyway, during the escape, Klaus finds a briefcase, which is actually a time machine. Klaus travels back in time during the Vietnam War and falls in love with a soldier, who obviously gets killed during the war. Klaus was already a broken man, and the heartbreak made things even worse for the character.

While all this is happening, a guy named Leonard asks Vanya to give him violin lessons, and the duo ends up developing a romantic relationship. Shockingly, Leonard’s real name is Harold Jenkins, and he’s the same guy that is responsible for the apocalypse. As a child, Harold always wanted to be a part of The Umbrella Academy, which didn’t happen. So, after growing up, Harold resorted to other means to take revenge on the group. Harold knew that Vanya actually had superpowers, and Hargreeves asked Allison to use her mind manipulation ability to make Vanya forget about her powers. All this time, Harold has been using Vanya to do his bidding, and in rage, Vanya ends up hurting Allison. After that, Vanya kills Harold for breaking her heart.

Finally, Vanya goes to a violin recital, where she uses the music to channel her powers, which are dangerous enough to destroy the world. Allison and the other characters knock down Vanya, but one wave of her energy hits the Moon. After that, the Moon starts falling on Earth, thus leading to the apocalypse. Fortunately, Number Five comes up with a plan, and he asks the group to travel back in time with him, so they can save the world as a group.

Season 2

In the second season, we learn that Number Five has dropped his siblings at different points in time. Allison was left in 1961, where she created a life for herself and married someone. Luther, on the other hand, was in 1962 and became a bodyguard of Jack Ruby, the person who was behind Lee Harward Oswald’s murder. Diego and Vanya were in 1963 Dallas, and while Diego spends his time in the mental facility after trying to save JFK, Vanya spends her years on a farm, and she has forgotten everything that happened. However, Klaus had the best time during all this, as he became a cult leader due to his quirky nature.

Anyway, Number Five realizes that the siblings have brought the end of the world with them, so an apocalypse is coming in ten days. So, even if he doesn’t want to, Number Five contacts Allison, Luther, Diego, and Klaus for help. However, the most powerful member of the group, Vanya, don’t even remember anything about her powers. She does use her powers accidentally on the farm while saving a young boy named Harlan. While trying to save the child, Vanya transfers some of her powers to him.

In the midst of all this, we learn that Handler is plotting an act of revenge against the siblings. She is using her daughter, Lila, who, by the way, was also born on October 1st, 1989. So, similar to other members of The Umbrella Academy, Lila also has superhuman powers. But what’s genuinely complicated is that Lila spent a lot of time with Diego in the mental facility, and they both created a romantic relationship. Lila and Handler make things difficult for everyone, so the group meets Hargreeves at a time when he was alive, but of course, he doesn’t prove helpful.

Finally, everyone learns that the reason for this upcoming apocalypse is Vanya, again. She is the bomb that’ll go off in a few days, and only Ben has the power to stop Vanya. Ben does just that, but he sacrifices his life during the whole thing. In the end, the group gets together to save Harlan, who can’t control the powers he received from Vanya.

Vanya decides to save Harlan by taking the powers back from him, but the Commission arrives at the farm with Lila and Handler. The siblings defeat the enemy, and the Handler dies during the fight. Lila survives the whole ordeal and escapes. Harlan, on the other hand, still has Vanya’s powers. Number Five now gathers the siblings, and time jumps to go back home. Unfortunately, the group arrives in a different timeline, where The Umbrella Academy is the Sparrow Academy. What’s fascinating is that Hargreeves and Ben are still alive in this new timeline.
