An OVO spokesperson: “We’re very sorry to [the customer] for the inconvenience.

“We’re attempting to contact him to provide a resolution and offer a goodwill gesture.”

According to energy regulatory authority Ofgem, a customer cannot be charged for gas or electricity used more than 12 months ago if they have not been correctly billed for it or informed about it via a statement of account before.

Data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show a rising percentage of the population is struggling amid the cost of living crisis.

In September, 45 percent of adults who paid energy bills were finding it very, or somewhat, difficult to afford them – up from 40 percent in June.
