While that is below inflation, areas including Essex and Suffolk will see hikes higher than inflation, up to 10 percent. Others may even see bills fall by six percent. Each home’s charges depend on how much water is used and if there is a meter.
The increase was revealed a day after 22 million households were told energy bills will rise by more than 50 percent from April and after regulator Ofwat was told by ministers to clean rivers and improve supply.
Water companies have been urged to tackle sewage and pollution and Ofwat wants them to support hard-up customers.
Christine McGourty, boss of Water UK, said customers will still pay “little more than £1 a day”.
